About Stockholm Life

Stockholm Life Solna-Stockholm is a hub for research and development within life science in Hagastaden. The place where Solna and Stockholm meet is already today a strong centre where academic knowledge, industry and healthcare providers cooperate to contribute to improved health and life quality.

This on-going work is based on the unique conditions which exist here and sets its goal in transforming Stockholm Life Solna-Stockholm into a world-leading life science arena.

For whom is the area being built?

The area is being built for everyone! Stockholm Life is part of a new city area which is growing by the border between Solna and Stockholm – integrated in the city’s beat and with nature around the corner. Large investments are being made in accommodation, life science-related property and communication so that the area is filled with service, culture and recreation.

In addition, Stockholm Life Solna-Stockholm is a knowledge cluster where academic institutions, life science companies, healthcare providers, authorities within the medical sphere as well internationally-relevant research projects are present in a concentrated area and where the conditions for cooperation are favourable and constantly being improved.

What is life science?

Life science covers studies on people, animals and nature and comprises a series of different subjects such as biology, mathematics, chemistry and medicine. Life science knowledge is created by the cooperation between these traditional subjects, but also with physics and technology, not only from academic research but also from the industry world.

Many different types of knowledge are needed to better understand life and health, e.g. genetics to understand heredity, psychology to understand people’s behaviour, thoughts and feelings, mathematics and ICT for analysis of data and engineering for development of technology.

The path from an idea to a readily-available product (a drug, for instance) is long, expensive and full of risks. To shorten the path between idea and product a meaningful cooperation between the different actors is needed: healthcare providers (where needs are identified), researchers (who come up with ideas based on the healthcare providers’ needs) and industry (which develops products for an improved health and life).
