Stockholm-Uppsala: Sweden's life science motor

The life science sector in Sweden is strongly concentrated in the region around lake Mälaren with Uppsala, Stockholm including Flemingsberg and Solna, Södertälje as well as Strängnäs as nodes in a strong life science cluster. More than the half of the country’s life science strength is based in the Stockholm-Uppsala region.

Examples of that are world-leading companies like AstraZeneca which is established in Södertälje, GE Healthcare in Uppsala and Pfizer which has placed its largest biotechnical production unit in Strängnäs. The life science industry in the region accounts for 5% of the total turn-over in the region (Stockholm, Uppsala and Södermanland) and for 2% of the total employment in the region.

There are about 570 joint-stock companies in the region around lake Mälaren, which corresponds to a total turn-over of nearly 125 billion SEK. The industry in the region employs over 23 000 people.

Academia and healthcare

Besides the presence of the industry in the region there are five universities (Uppsala University, Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and two university hospitals (Uppsala University Hospital and Karolinska University Hospital).
